Westmore Family

The Westmore Family are a well known family in Hollywood makeup. There have been four family generations that have been involved in makeup in all sorts of different areas.

George Westmore was born on 27th June, 1879, Isle of Wight, England, UK. He was a hairdresser who emigrated from England to the US with his family in the early 20th century. Westmore was determined on making sure himself and his family were comfortable with money, therefore he took up wig making before he ventured into becoming a makeup artist. Movies were slow moving in America at the time, but he found the first ever makeup department for film. He then taught his sons; Monte, Perc, Ern, and Wally the in's and out's of the profession. Frank Westmore was born on April 13, 1923 in Maywood, California, USA. He is a son of George's. He did makeup work on films and is known for 'Hart to Hart' (1979), 'Ten Commandments' (1956), and 'Being There' (1979). He married three times; Gloria Christan, Johnnie Fay Rector, and Fran Shore. Ern Westmore was born on October 29, 1904 in Kent, England, UK. Ern is known for his makeup work on 'Blood on the Sun' (1945), 'Jamaica Inn' (1939), and 'He Walked by Night' (1948). Perc Westmore is another son of George Westmore, a well known wig maker. He began his career in 1921. His job was to create perfected bone structure through makeup so the actors were more photogenic to the camera. Monty Westmore was born on 12 June, 1923, Los Angeles, California, USA. 'He began his makeup career at Warner Bros. in 1943 as an apprentice to his uncle, Perc Westmore. From 1950 through 1957, he worked at Universal Studios. Westmore then served as a makeup artist on the classic, long-running comedy series 'The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet' during the show's last seven years (1959-66). He was also actress Joan Crawford's personal makeup artist on the films 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' (1962) and 'Straight-Jacket' (1964).'

Later on in Monty's career, Paul Newman had a favourite makeup artist which happened to be him. He worked on 17 of Paul Newman's films. A few examples are; 'The Towering Inferno' (1974), 'The Verdict' (1982) and 'The Hudsucker Proxy' (1994).
