Introduction to Drawing

This is our introduction to drawing. At the beginning of the introduction, we used a number of different pencils ranging from HB - 8B. This was to see the different gradients you can get from different pencils dependant on how soft the lead is. My favourite pencil is the 6B and 8B, I love the shading and dark tone you can create with them. We were then given a task to create parallel straight lines holding on by just the end of pencil. The movement all comes from the shoulder, and not the hand itself. This helps to keep the pencil line straight.

After conquering this task, we then moved on to drawing different shapes; circles, squares, ovals and triangles. We repeated each shape to try and make them as similar as possible to one another; this is to show continuity and just for practise.

Then, we moved onto drawing 3D shapes by using shading. I enjoyed doing so as it helps to think about lighting and where the shadow will form dependant on where the light is shone from.  My favourite to draw is probably the cylinder, or sphere.

After this introduction to drawing, our lecturer then set a task to finish at home. This was to draw a still life. I chose an apple cut in half as I thought it would give myself more of a challenge. I enjoy drawing so it's never a dull moment for me. The improvements I would make to my still life drawing would be to lessen the shading underneath the apple and possibly create more detail in the core area. I think this would help to make the drawing look more realistic.
